Kahelelani (Ka-hey-lay-lani) shells are also known as Ni'ihau shells, named such because they can be found on a select few of Ni'ihau's secluded beaches. Kahelelani has a modern translation of "pathway to heaven" because each shell resembles a spiral staircase climbing up into the sky.
